Keep a Finger on the Financial Pulse of Your Practice

Many practice owners have no real idea of how well the business is doing until they receive annual figures from the accountant a few months after the year-end.

By this time you may be surprised to see that your turnover and, or, profits have fallen gradually over the year. dreamstime_xs_51946471

In addition to tracking turnover, it is important to watch some key figures closely to make sure they don’t increase out of line with turnover. Those to watch include associate payments, hygienist fees, lab bills, dental materials and wages.

Data Security & Protection Toolkit

YDMLogoBridging

For those who have not yet picked this up, here is a link to the new Data Security & Protection Toolkit, which replaced the previous Information Governance toolkit from April 2018 in anticipation of GDPR. Security word cloud illustration concept

The Data Security and Protection Toolkit is an online self-assessment tool that enables practices to measure and publish their performance against NHS/GDPR requirements

All practices with NHS patients must use this toolkit to show they are practising good data security and that personal information is handled correctly.

The information also provides good evidence to CQC of compliance with “Well Led” criteria and is available to wholly-private practices upon request.

Private, NHS or Mixed NHS/Private?

YDMLogoBridging_25%

Interesting findings as I start work with another practice converting from mixed private/NHS to fully private.
Latest NASDAL survey continues to suggest that focusing fully on either Private or NHS dentistry improves profitability. dreamstime_s_47428558_YDM_Branded
Also highlights the fact that larger practices and small groups can benefit from economies of scale to improve profitability.
Always difficult for mixed practices to differentiate between the service offered to NHS and to private patients, which operate on different business models and a significantly different cost basis.
Interestingly, one of the main drivers behind this latest conversion has been the difficulty recruiting associate NHS performers.
